The toolkit of an effective SAFe Program Consultant

Big organizational changes only have a chance of succeeding if there is a clear vision for the future that has broad support. A SAFe implementation will be successful if enough people are involved and are prepared to work together according to the SAFe principles. The SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) takes the lead in this. As a SPC you’re responsible for setting up the new organisation. You train teams in the SAFe framework and help colleagues to find their way in their new role. The SPC gets the organisation moving and steers everyone in the right direction.

What does a SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) need in order to be successful?

In order to do the job well, you need a well-stocked toolkit. The following tools should be included:

1 In-depth knowledge of the SAFe model

In order to implement agile in scale in your organisation with SAFe, it’s important that you know how SAFe works, so that you can exchange ideas with others about it. How can we ensure that stakeholders from top to bottom work together in order to define value streams and set up Agile Release Trains? How could we plan for the realisation of a Product Increment? These are questions you have to deal with on a daily basis as an SPC.

2 An Agile Mindset

Most successful SPCs also apply the Lean Agile principles that SAFe is based on. Not because they’re obliged to, but because they truly believe in the power of flexibility and of always being able to adjust to the new reality. Agile isn’t something you do, it’s what you are.

3 Coaching skills

In every organisation, different interests and expectations are at play.So the tensions during a SAFe transition can run high. A true SPC is an Agile leader who thinks along with the organisation and ensures that everyone is aligned. The aim is to develop a flexible, learning organisation in which everyone realises their full potential. In order to achieve this, your coaching skills will be in great demand: insight into human nature, empathy, tact, persuasiveness and perseverance. A training course can help you to develop these sorts of skills.
