AI is evolving rapidly. What used to be scarce and expensive is now widely accessible, with new models delivering similar performance at a fraction of the cost. AI is no longer limited to innovation budgets or isolated experiments. It is becoming part of everyday work and that changes the challenge entirely.
For a long time, the conversation around AI focused on possibility: what it can do, how good the models are, and which tools to use. That phase is largely behind us.
In most organisations, AI is already available and being used, often without any central coordination. As a result, the bottleneck is no longer access to technology, but the choices organisations make about how it is used.
Where there used to be a clear “best” option, there is now a wide range of tools and models available. AI is embedded in productivity tools, development environments, HR processes and customer interactions; sometimes by design, and sometimes simply because it comes built in.
This leads to fragmented use across the organisation. And with that comes a new reality: AI is being used, whether it is actively organised or not.
The question is no longer if you are using AI, but who decides how.
Traditionally, technology decisions were made within IT. AI breaks that pattern.
AI directly affects how people work, how decisions are made, and how information is interpreted. That makes it an organisational question rather than a purely technical one.
It is no longer just about functionality, but about ownership, responsibility, risk and behaviour. In other words, it requires governance.
Many organisations still see governance and regulation, such as the AI Act, as a limitation. In practice, the opposite is often true.
Without clear structure, AI use becomes fragmented, ownership remains unclear, and risks only become visible after the fact. With clear structure, organisations gain visibility into how AI is used, make better decisions, build trust, and create the conditions needed to scale.
Governance does not slow organisations down, it enables them to move forward with confidence.
In many organisations, AI is still largely in the pilot phase. There is a lot of exploration, but without clear choices, that is where it stays.
Moving forward requires a shift in approach. Organisations need to make explicit decisions about where AI adds value, define ownership, agree on standards for quality and responsibility, and integrate AI into existing processes.
It is no longer about experimenting to discover what is possible, but about steering towards what works.
AI does not create value on its own. It creates value when organisations make conscious decisions about how it is used, assign ownership, understand and manage risks, and embed AI into how work actually happens.
Organisations that take this step move ahead, not because they have better tools, but because they make better choices.
AI is no longer just a technological development. It is an organisational challenge.
The question is no longer which tool to choose, but how to organise responsible use.
